My career has always been in trucking and most types of commercial ground transportation. I grew up in and around this industry. After military service, I began college while working full time. My first 20 years included working virtually all areas of trucking but primarily safety and claims; 10 years as VP Risk with a multi-company employer and another 10 years with another multi-carrier employer in the same VP Safety/Claims position. I started my own company 29 years ago and it continues today. Throughout these years, during my employment and in my own business, I have been active in most of the applicable associations and I have served as an expert witness in numerous court trials involving commercial motor vehicles. In the early 1980's, I initiated the formation of the Professional Truck Driver Institute, with the help of the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association, as part of the TIA (Trucking Industry Alliance) at that time. In the mid-70's, I started the first licensed truck driver training program in Nebraska. I also trained the state truck driver license examiners. Later, I assisted Brazil's officials with the development of Brazil's first truck driver training program in Rio de Janeiro for their Vo-Tech system, including the course curriculum. I started the first truck driver training program certified by the PTDI and assisted several U.S. vocational-technical schools in starting their own truck driver training programs. Prior to CDL,I authored two state truck driver manuals and several other publications.
