What a big year this is for the Centre in what is our 25th year and I am delighted that Dame Judi Dench has accepted the invitation to become Patron following the sad passing of Sir Peter O'Sullevan last year. The Silver Jubilee is a great time to celebrate the Centre's achievements and we hope that as many riders as possible will take part in the 'Ride For Retraining' with the aim to complete over 7,000 miles in total - the distance round the coast of mainland Britain. Can't believe it will be four years in April since taking up the of chairman of Go Racing In Yorkshire and very gratifying to be asked to stay on as chairman of this innovative group.It was an interesting year at GRIY with our new General Manager Emma White coming on board last April and making a big impression. Exciting times ahead methinks.

Big year ahead with nine meetings for the first time to say nothing of the first branch into raceday concerts with Simply Red appearing after racing on the opening day on May 28, followed by Jools Holland the following day, when there is no racing!Before all that begins, there will be the usual Cheltenham Festival preview evening on Thursday, March 10 so hopefully we will all be well primed as usual for the extravaganza in Gloucestershire the following week.

Given the brief to build the profile of the company in horse racing.Covered the sport nationwide, attending all the major meetings in the season as well as major races in Ireland, France and the Breeders Cup in the United States. In 1995 covered the Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Kyoto, Japan.

John was elected President of the Horserace Writers & Reporters Association as it was known after a straight fight at the ballot with his good friend Christopher Poole of the London Evening Standard. After winning the vote, he immediately asked Christopher to become vice-chairman, a role he accepted.Until his election, the Presidency was open-ended, so John introduced a three year term of office and was successfully re-elected three times before resigning in 2004 for personal reasons.During his term in office, John opened the Association to racing photographers, who had previously had their own organisation and renamed the Association the Horserace Writers & Photographers Association. He also commissioned the logo which is a horse's head against a camera lens, but when turned upside down is a pen nib with two splashes of ink.Other innovations were to completely re-vamp the Association's flagship Derby Awards Lunch, held annually at the Lancaster Hotel, London on the first Monday in December, changes which saw the attendance rise from around 400 to over 600 each year.He also successfully negotiated the first sponsorship of the Lunch, introduced sponsored golf tournaments at Goodwood and York each year and also introduced the popular tipping competition at the major meetings.During John's Presidency, the assets and membership of the Association increased dramatically and, for the first time, donations were made to leading racing charities.
