Since leaving Robertson Timberkit I have set up my own design consultancy, offering my experience to the timber engineering industry.John Simpson Timber Solutions Ltd is a consultancy specialising in the offsite manufacture of residential and commercial structures using timber and timber-based products.Our mission is to provide structural solutions to maximise offsite manufacture in an effort to minimise on site operations. This provides a faster build, saving on costs whilst providing a safer environment for on site operatives. We deliver this by establishing, collating and managing all design inputs to ensure the final product is not only fit for purpose but also value engineered by reducing design assuptions.

Whilst working at DBM Consultants, I worked closely with Robertson Timberkit, delivering large complex timber structures throughout the UK. I took the opportunity to lead the design and technical functions for Robertson Timberkit in May 2008. In doing so, I further developed my technical skills whilst also focusing on modern methods of construction. MMC detailing requires greater emphasis on sustainability, air tightness, u-value, SAP and thermal nbridging etc. In additional to these technical skills, I also gained far greater experience in management, coordination, CDM and health and safety.

For four years I was Technical Manager within a consulting civil and structural engineering firm. This company strategically focused its resources towards the growing timber frame construction market and sought my employment because of my vast experience in designing timber engineered products i.e. timber frame panels, engineered I joists and trussed rafters. In my time at this company I gained valuable experience, confidence and knowledge in my chosen speciality of timber engineering.I was responsible for a busy drawing office which produces timber frame drawing packages to clients such as timber frame manufacturers. My duties included programming work, quality assurance control, dealing with technical queries from colleagues and clients, development and continued professional development.

Over an eight year period I developed from design technician through to senior positions of truss design and onto designer / estimator for timber frame structures. RTC was an invaluable start to my career within timber structures.
