John has had considerable influence in making the public aware of the New Classicism since the 1980s. As founder and principal of John Simpson Architects, John delights in being closely involved in all of the firm’s projects, particularly during the crucial design stages. His main works include the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace completed to mark Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee in 2002; the Brownsword Market Building in Poundbury; and commissions for the colleges of Gonville and Caius and Peterhouse in Cambridge, and Lady Margaret Hall in Oxford. He has won awards for his work on the Carhart Mansion on 5th Avenue in New York including the Palladio Award and the Arthur Ross Award. More recently he has worked on the new public facilities at Kensington Palace, which were opened for Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the new quadrangle at Eton College and the new Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre. John is particularly skilled at arranging spaces to maximise their efficiency and to make them enjoyable to use, which has led to the practice’s urban masterplans being cited as examples of best practice.John is also eminent in the Urban design field, first coming to prominence with his design for Paternoster Square in the City of London in the early 1990’s. Since then, he has become the master planner for several new mixed use freestanding urban settlements and extensions in England.
