John is an energy industry executive and consultant with over 30 years experience in upstream oil and gas, midstream processing & transportation, downstream refining & chemicals, power generation and power systems manufacture, focused variously on the UK, US, Europe, Australia and the Middle East.During his 25 year career with BP plc and prior to retiring in July, 2013 he occupied various VP and Asst. General Counsel roles and held directorships in numerous BP operating subsidiaries including BP Exploration Operating Company Ltd and Britoil plc.His experience in corporate governance, major incident management and risk mitigation strategies assisted BP’s downstream businesses in a major incidents investigation at Grangemouth in 2000-2003 and it’s UK upstream business with the investigation and management of the Bond Helicopter incident in 2009. John has recently joined the board of SPE Energy Ltd following the company's period of extensive R&D over the last 3.5 years. The transformation of SPE is described in the 2018 UK Parliamentary Review. He acted as a consultant for Burness Paull LLP in respect of RWE’s huge 5 TCF West Nile Delta Project in Egypt in 2014. He continues to represent Oil & Gas UK on the boards of The Fisheries Legacy Trust Company and FLTC Services Ltd (the joint UK oil and gas and UK fisheries industries charitable trust overseen by DECC) where he has held a position as non-executive director since 2007.John began his career as an administrative manager and director of Challenger Diving Ltd in 1978, before joining Paull & Williamsons as a corporate lawyer in 1980 and BP in 1988. He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree and DipLP from the University of Aberdeen and is a Solicitor, Notary Public and Fellow of the Institute of Directors.
