Instructor, Mechanical Engineering DepartmentJohns Hopkins University - Engineering For Professionals Program, Whiting School Of Engineering Aug 2015 - Aug 2016Conceived, developed, and taught Masters-level class on Additive Manufacturing as part of the Engineering for Professionals Program. -
PhysicistNist 2010 - 2014As a member of the Science-Based Manufacturing group, I supported the missions of the Engineering Laboratory and the Intelligent Systems Division by providing expertise and by conducting research and development in the areas of measurement methods and sensor sensor systems for improving scientific understanding and control of manufacturing processes. My research areas were in the development of measurement methods for additive manufacturing processes and materials, and I managed a large inter-disciplinary project that develops measurements and standards for additive materials (both raw metal powders and finished AM parts.) -
Strategic Planning ManagerNational Institute Of Standards And Technology 2003 - 2010Had primary responsibility for the development of the strategic and operational vision of the NIST Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory (MEL), including continual assessment of industry needs and potential MEL programmatic response. Wrote and implemented laboratory strategic and operational plans. Advised MEL Director on technical and programmatic issues. Made recommendations for improvements to MEL programs. Served as a member of the Senior MEL Management Team. -
Nist Liaison To UscarNational Institute Of Standards And Technology 2004 - 2008Served as NIST Liaison to the US Council on Automotive Research (USCAR), a collaborative organization made up of the Detroit-3 (GM, Ford, Chrysler), which focused on pre- and non-competitive technical issues of mutual interest. Interacted extensively with automotive executives to determine their measurement and standards needs and to advocate for the NIST automotive project portfolio. Started and managed several NIST projects of interest to USCAR over a period of four years, with a total funding of several million dollars. -
Senior Technical Advisor To Nist DirectorNational Institute Of Standards And Technology 2001 - 2003Helped form the NIST Industrial Liaison Office (ILO), a new NIST entity with the express mission of improving the industrial impact of the NIST Laboratory programs in selected focus areas. Had primary responsibility for NIST interactions with the U.S. automotive industry, cultivated new relationships and maintained existing relationships between NIST and the automotive industry. Advocated NIST's technical project portfolio - comprised of 80 projects with a total funding level of roughly $40 million - of work applicable to the automotive industry. Sought and received industry feedback on portfolio and presented results to senior NIST management and researchers in order to improve impact and for long term strategic planning. Organized and chaired the NIST Automotive Industry Executive Roundtable (2003), an executive-level discussion on the present and future strategic needs of the automotive industry. -
Scientific AdvisorNational Institute Of Standards And Technology 1999 - 2001Served as Scientific Advisor to the Director of the NIST Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory, one of seven NIST measurement and standards labs that had a staff of 400 and an annual operating budget of $44 million. Advised Director on technical and programmatic issues. Made recommendations for improvements to MEL programs. Served as a member of the Senior MEL Management Team, a group composed of the MEL Director, Deputy Director, Division Chiefs, and Executive Officer. Articulated and documented program plans and status for both internal and external use. Managed and organized programmatic data, participated in MEL planning processes, including annual program reviews and strategic planning efforts. Prepared MEL-level responses to internal and external requests, assisted in the making of decisions on internal proposals, prepared and developed both internal and external presentations and publications for MEL Director and Deputy Director. -
PhysicistNational Institute Of Standards And Technology 1989 - 1999Served as a member of the Ultrasonic Standards Group, performing ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation (NDE) research and development, with special emphasis on manufacturing applications. Researched and developed the ultrasonic testing of industrial and advanced materials for surface roughness, intrinsic properties, sub-surface and bulk defects, and interfaces. Used computers extensively to model ultrasonic phenomena, to interface with ultrasonic instrumentation, to automate data acquisition and to analyze ultrasonic data. Developed on-line, in-process ultrasonic sensor systems for industrial manufacturing applications, including a real-time ultrasonic surface roughness monitor. Performed feasibility tests and special measurements for industrial clients in the manufacturing, metals, and aerospace industries. Was responsible for the NIST ultrasonic reference block calibration service, including the maintenance and development of the calibration system, calibration of artifacts, and writing calibration reports. Performed research in support of new alternative ultrasonic calibration schemes. Investigated nonlinear propagation of ultrasound in water media and the resulting impact of such on industrial test interpretation and measurement uncertainty. Supervised students and guest researchers in research efforts. Served as chairman of ASTM subcommittee E07-06-02 on Ultrasonic Calibrations and Reference blocks.
