Mr Smithson is a civil engineer with over 40 years’ professional experience, specialising in environmental infrastructure planning, water supply and wastewater engineering. Until retiring in January 2006 he was China Country Director for Mott MacDonald Group, General Manager and Director of Mott MacDonald (Beijing) and Divisional Director for the.

Was responsible for the management and technical direction of water supply, wastewater and pollution control projects, both internationally and in the UK. International Projects included:2005 – 2006 Water Utilities Planning Expert, Banda Aceh, Indonesia – Mr Smithson was a member of a World Bank team providing advise to the Indonesian authority responsible.

Mr Smithson led a Sino-British team of engineers and planners on a study of the trends and constraints for urban environmental improvements in the Pearl Delta region. The study was commissioned by the World Bank, and the team worked closely with the Provincial Planning Commission in Guangdong.

Master plan, preliminary and detailed designs for water supply, wastewater and solid waste improvements in five cities in Sichuan Province.

Mr Smithson was responsible for all aspects of report preparation, particularly the master plan for Shanghai Metropolitan area sewerage and sewage treatment project.

Mr Smithson acted as Project Manager for a feasibility study for a major UK contractor for a 350 000 m3/d wastewater treatment plant and associated sewerage funded under the UK Aid and Trade Provision.

Mr Smithson led a team for the study, design and implementation of about 60 major water supply schemes covering all the six northern states of Malaysia. 1983 Cameroon, Industry Establishment Project - Member of a multidisciplinary team (financial/marketing, agricultural, engineering) investigating the feasibility of establishing a new industry based in.

Nigeria, Benue State Water Supplies - Responsible for the completion of feasibility reports and preliminary designs and costings for water supplies to 63 towns in Benue State. 1982 Nigeria, Kwara State Water Supplies - Responsible for a team of engineers, hydrologists and hydrogeologists undertaking surveys and field investigations for 21 communities.

Duties included a study of the treatment processes and efficiency of all sewage treatment works in Scotland, and a national river water quality survey.

Worked on various schemes involving raw water intakes, water treatment works, pipelines, pumping stations, dams, wastewater treatment. Acted as design engineer and construction supervision engineer.
