John Soos has been a social studies teacher in the Baltimore County Public Schools system since 1996 and has spent his entire teaching career at Sudbrook Magnet Middle School (SMMS) in Pikesville, Maryland. From 1998 until 2004, and again during the 2009-2010 school year, he was Sudbrook’s social studies department chairman. Between 2001 and 2003 he was the coordinator for Sudbrook’s Facing History and Ourselves program which focuses on the Holocaust and the American Civil Rights Movement and, as the FHAO program states, strives to teach students about “the dangers of indifference and the values of civility.” In 2000 and 2001, John traveled to Japan with teachers and students from Sudbrook where, over a two-week period, they visited the cultural sites of Kyoto, Nara, and Tokyo and spent one week living with Japanese families and attending schools in Kawasaki, Baltimore’s sister city in Japan.In 2001 and 2002, John coached the school’s Quiz Bowl team, leading it to the Baltimore County title (2002).Prior to teaching, he worked in private industry for such companies as Legg Mason and Control Data Business Management Services (now Ceridian).John is fluent in Hungarian and has visited his extended family in Hungary a number of times. In his free time he enjoys reading, writing, hiking, and traveling.
