After establishing that there was a market in the local area for a hobby and gaming club in 2012 I decided to approach a friend and an investor to set one up at a local community centre. Within 6 months the club was flourishing and had already outgrown the confines of the hall both physically and financially. We realised that there was a real opportunity to take the club from a once a week event to a retail location and turn it in to a proper business. In early 2013 we did just that and found a retail unit that was both the right size and price to allow the business to grow at it's own pace. After setting up all of the necessary trade accounts we set about decorating the store and opened in April. The store was an instant success and was full from open to close 7 day a week. A few months in we started to take on volunteers to help us carry the enormous load we'd created for ourselves and they helped us to move the store forward, redecorating the rest of the shop to accomodate the increasing numbers of customers. By the end of 2013 we'd started to support other local clubs and had established ourselves as a touch point for the gaming community at large for miles around.We continued to grow the store over the next two years, taking on more product lines and improving our standing in the gaming world at a national level. By mid 2014 we'd turned our already bustling club into a fully fledged community and began looking in to taking on a larger store. By mid 2015 we decided to simply take on a second larger store and expand the business. A short time later I decided that I'd achieved everything I set out to and sold my share of the business to my partner.The store continues to flourish and the second much larger store is nearing completion and should open mid 2016. Owning my own successful business has to be my proudest career accomplishment so far and it taught me a whole different side to retail and a whole new skill set I would have otherwise lacked.
