• Many cells have a sensing mechanism that can only be measured indirecly. Dinoflagellates serve as an excellent primary reporter for mechanical stress because the bioluminescence response is so fast.• The main approach to this study was to pharmacologically treat cells with drugs that impart structural changes to microtubules and F-actin and monitoring changes in the bioluminescence response.• I used confocal microscopy to elucidate structural changes to microtubules and F-actin that occur upon treatment with these drugs and correlated structural changes to changes in bioluminescence.• I added value to this project, using my confocal microscopy skills showing F-actin rather than microtubules contribute more to mechanosensitivity, a conclusion that differed from our hypothesis
