John B. Strait is a Professor of Geography and Coordinator of the Geography Program in the Geography and Geology Department at Sam Houston State University. Dr. Strait is a broadly trained human geographer who specializes in socio-cultural and urban geography. His major research interests lie at the intersections of racial and ethnic identity, urban residential dynamics, and the spatial realization of socioeconomic disadvantage. He primarily directs his investigations of these topics towards understanding their dynamics within the context of three distinct geographical regions: the U.S. South, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Hawaiian Islands. Dr. Strait’s teaching and research interests also focus on the geographies of music, religion, social movements, food and migration, and the ways that these cultural phenomena are expressed via representations of “place” and “space.” He possesses specific interests and expertise in the geographical evolution and dissemination of blues-influenced culture and music, and it relationships to the Civil Rights Movement, particularly in regards to the Mississippi Delta. Dr. Strait possesses considerable experience directing field work, field trips and workshops that incorporate foci on the aforementioned topics.
