John is a senior executive with decades of experience of leadership, strategy, innovation, and execution. John’s leadership and inventions for DOCSIS have had a significant impact on the cable industry and he is well recognized in the cable industry. As part of the cable industry, John invented Remote PHY (RPHY) in 2001. RPHY is now the new HFC architecture. John also invented D3.0 channel bonding (wideband) and D3.1 profile management, used in PMA.John joined Cisco when it was a private start-up company in 1989 and later co-founded the Cable BU at Cisco as an internal startup that has generated $Bs in revenue. One of John's inventions was Remote PHY (a RAN-like architecture for cable) which is now the foundation of all new cable access plants.John is a prolific inventor with over 130 patents (filed and/or issued) and 50 published papers. John is skilled at identifying technical and product opportunities that provide value to his business and customers. He has a track record of creating an idea, setting the strategy, architecting a solution, writing standards, pitching the product to customers and executives, getting funding, and then cross-functionally managing engineering, PLM, and field teams to build, ship, and support the product.John is passionate about developing diverse talent. He mentors industry executives and serves on the DE/Fellow promotion committee at Cisco.In 2012, John was inducted into the SCTE Hall of Fame, and in 2015 was inducted into the Cable TV Pioneer society, received the National Innovation Award in China for his invention of Remote PHY, and receive three Pioneer awards in Cisco. John is also a 7th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, a 5th degree Black Belt in Hapkido, and a blue belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

This chip was used for the next 10+ years in every Cisco product.- Cisco Smart Serial Interface: Invented, designed, and shipped the serial interface that is used on all Cisco routers. It combined 12 synchronous serial interfaces into one connector. (5in1, then 12in1). Worked with silicon manufacturers (Linear Technologies, Exar, Maxim) to design a universal serial chip.- Cisco 3000 Access Router: Designed and shipped. It supported Ethernet, serial, and ISDN.- AGS+ Link Controller card: Designed and shipped. It was a hand-designed 108 bit horizontally micro-coded multi-scaler computer architecture built out of discrete F logic chips.- HSSI (High Speed Serial Interface): Invented, designed and shipped a HSSI product for the AGS+. HSSI allowed the early internet to upgrade from 1.5 Mbps to 45 Mbps. HSSI was adopted by the entire industry. For 10-15 years, the entire internet backbone ran over HSSI. -
