A general practitioner for 39 years, I believe passionaltely in general practice as the best way of delivering primary health care. I was a GP principal from 1969 to 2002 following a 5 year period of hospital work; principally in general medicine. I also continued to work as a Hospital Practitioner until 1985. Since 2002, I have been a sessional GP. I also have a long experience of medical education at all levels and of approaches to quality improvement and assurance in both clinical practice and education. I have a strong belief in the involvement of patients and the public in their health care and have been Chair of a Primary Care Trust. I should like to see general practice become even more responsive to people as individuals and to develop its capacity for delivering comprehensive health care. I think that some of the recent changes may have made this more difficult but there are now great opportunities to reinforce the central role of general practice in the NHS but this will require vison and innovation. I am interested in trying to support practices and their commissioners in developing appropriate organisations and services.Specialties: For nearly all of my professional career, I have been involved working across boundaries - between groups of GPs, between GPs and other professionals, between professionals and politicians and managers and between professionals and patients. I have become accustomed to working at all levels in the NHS and the wider political arena. I hope that I have developed the necessary diplomatic and communication skills.
