Directed a team of three reporters at the Colorado Capitol in 2016 and, after cutbacks, acted as The Statesman's main Capitol reporter in 2017. State lawmaking is a fascinating, sometimes arcane, petty, and inspiring business that affects lives directly.

Boulder-Denver

Relaunched The Colorado Independent, formerly one of the American Independent News Network's state politics sites, as a standalone journalism nonprofit. Working with former Denver Post columnist Susan Greene, we secured funding, hired a team of five editorial staffers, redesigned and relaunched the site, registered as a nonprofit and assembled an advisory board. I wrote near-daily pieces, managed copy flow, acted as webmaster and designer and edited all copy.

Boulder/Denver

Wrote daily blogs and reported pieces and weekly investigative articles for this state politics news site. Covered legislative and election politics, including contentious related issues in the state with special emphasis on civil rights, campaign finance, the extraction industry and the environmental movement.

Managed a team of hundreds of amateur reporters covering the 2008 U.S. presidential election. Top-edited, copyedited and proofed nearly all material published to the site. Helped develop story assignments and coordinate and publish crowd-sourced multi-author stories and series of stories. Created campaign beats. Promoted reporting to national outlets. Off the Bus was a path-breaking citizen-journalism project that changed news narratives, introduced new news-gathering methods and practices and garnered more than 2 million views per week.

Greater Los Angeles Area

I ran the Annenberg School's Pop+Politics youth culture/politics website and journalism graduate school training program. It was a semi-early foray into digital journalism instruction. We taught multimedia and networked theory and techniques and explored the dynamic but often underappreciated relationship between youth culture and political engagement.

Taught digital-era English-language communications in the Applied Economics department at the University of Paris system's economics and management school.

As a founding member of this startup arts, style and politics city magazine, I wrote and edited stories, oversaw research, and copy edited and proofed the magazine cover to cover.

Wrote reports for the United Nations Security Council commission established to investigate human rights violations in the former Yugoslavia. The work of the commission led to the establishment in the Hague of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.
