John W. Gardner, MD, DrPH is an academic preventive medicine physician and chronic disease and injury epidemiologist. His MD is from the University of Utah and DrPH from Harvard University, in addition to Pediatrics training at the University of Arizona. His experience includes medical education and epidemiologic research, and public health administration and policy. Dr. Gardner spent 20 years teaching preventive medicine and epidemiology at the University of Utah and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. His recent research has been on heat stroke, training injuries, exercise-related deaths, and military mortality. His earlier research was on cancer epidemiology, evaluating cancer occurrence related to individual, cultural, and institutional behavior. Dr. Gardner served as Chief of Preventive Medicine at the largest Army base, and in the Office of the Secretary of Defense developing policy relating to Force Health Protection and Medical Readiness, particularly focusing on comprehensive medical surveillance and pre-/post-deployment health assessment. He has extensive experience with military medical data systems and all aspects of prevention of injury and illness. From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Gardner served at FDA as Director of the Division of Compliance Risk Management and Surveillance in the Office of Compliance, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. This Division manages drug registration and listing, monitoring of drug product quality and compliance functions related to industry risk management and monitoring of adverse experiences related to the use of their drugs. From 2006 to 2008 Dr. Gardner chaired the Product Quality and Compliance Business Review Board, which is responsible for oversight of all product quality and compliance-related FDA data systems.
