John W. Ryan was formerly the Head of the Patent Practice at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering and Co-Chair of IP at (i) Dorsey & Whitney and (ii) Dechert. And, as the former Vice President and Chief Patent Counsel of IGEN International, Inc. (whose CEO was the co-founder of Amgen) which was later sold to Roche for $2.0 billion dollars, he has hands-on experience in the creation and management of patent portfolios, which has lead to company valuations in the hundreds of millions of dollars.And with over 30+ years of law firm and in-house experience, he has practiced in both the litigation and transactional side of intellectual property, including counseling, patentability, opinion work, litigation - patent infringement (approximately 30 cases), licensing, portfolio management (e.g., Hewlett-Packard), and trademark work. He also served as an adjunct professor of law at Albany Law School for two years teaching the licensing of intellectual property. • In 2012, John drafted invalidity and freedom to operate opinions in view of third party patents (for his client's product with sales of $1.5 billion in 2013) which were proven correct at trial and later affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in 2014.
