As a Software Development Manager @ M&S i'm responsible for the technical quality, delivery and line manage of two engineering teams. One is a internal Frontend scaffolding team who's responsibly for building and growing our internal FE tooling to support product teams and key aspect of the website. The second team i look after are a delivery team that are building out responsive web applications on top of the company framework and focusing on the Product Details Page on the M&S website. I'm also one of the key business consultants for large technical initiatives, high level sizing, planing and architecture views that i then bring back into the relevant team (either one of mine or another team) and help them break this down and work with them to break it down and design. We are also undertaking a large recruitment drive of around 35 people ranging from Engineering Managers, Scrum master, Senior Engineers to Junior Engineers. I've been filling the role as a hiring manager and helping to screen, run coding and culture interview sessions for candidates and part of the hiring and on-boarding process. I've been responsibly for around 15+ of the hires as part of this initiative. My day to day actives consist of: - Line manage, 1-1, objectives setting and reviews for my direct reports- Consultant and architecture overview of the whole websites web application layer and the key services they consume- Mentoring team members from both a coding, design and personal level. This is done via in person, pair programming, Code Reviews and whiteboard sessions- Work closely with the product owner and Scrum Master to make sure the teams are well looked after- Helping to define what Quality Engineering looks like at M&S and making improvements along the way- Feeding into the broader engineering depart strategy

As a front-end tech lead at M&S, I am leading three squads (teams) as well as proving technical direction for the main marks and Spencer’s website. One of the squads is building an internal framework and boilerplate application to enable quick rollout and ongoing maintainability of our front-end applications. The framework is to support M&S to a fully responsive and mobile-first website. The second squad is transitioning those older pages into the new responsive framework, co-ordinating with multiple teams such as APIs, UX and Design as well as platform technologies. I’m also looking after a smaller squad of performance engineers, who’s role is to support the development teams, bring in automated tooling and best practises.

Within Vodafone I worked very closely with the development and testing team to prepare devices for releasing to production. To do this, we followed a specific procedure to test every feature of the device for the appropriate aspect of the project.Within this role, I attended conference calls and meetings with all members of the team and management in the UK and Germany for the status of a device, the issues and solutions for the devices we may have; test the device and raise defect or bugs against the device issues that were present. I was predominantly based in London; however, I spent a great deal of time in Düsseldorf with the other member of the Device Certification team based out there.
