The purpose of the filters was to eliminate electrical AC noise at the sample which would otherwise destroy the quantum effects of interest.I worked on the project both independently and as part of a team where numerous obstacles needed to be overcame such as induced currents between wires while accounting difficulties imposed by sub-millikelvin temperatures and small size constraints. I employed a continuous cycle of extensive measurements, analysis and appropriate design refinement to achieve my goal.By the end of my placement, I was able to produce a filter design which had vastly improved characteristics compared to the previous filters in use. Additionally I gained the expertise necessary to advise more senior members of the team on how further improvements could be made. The entire process provided abundant opportunities to perfect my problem solving and analytical skills whilst gaining a valuable insight into the running of one of the most prominent scientific research groups in the university.
