I have been involved in education from 1961 when I taught for two years in a private school. I was Head of History in the CBS Secondary School, Glen Road 1963 - 1974, Headmaster of St Colm's Co-ed High School 1974-1990, full time teacher in the Northern Ireland Prison Service 1991-2001 (HMP Maghaberry - male and female prisons; HMP Maze), part-time teacher in Hydebank Young Offenders Centre and Female Prison 2001-2008. I was one of a team of 3 persons who prepared and published a report at the request of the Director of the Prison Service entitled Prison Education Beyond 2000. This was necessary as a result of the enormous changes caused by the accelerated release programme for political prisoners which resulted in the closure of the Maze Prison (Long Kesh) in 2000.
