During a 35 year career in international affairs I have worked for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the UK Department for International Development and with a range of international organisations including the EU, Council of Europe, the UN and NATO. Before taking up my current role as Head of Scotland House London, I opened and ran the Scottish Government's first representative Office in Ireland, having earlier been a Political Counsellor in the British Embassy in Ireland. Prior to my decade working in Ireland, I was a political adviser for NATO in Helmand Province in 2010/11, and before that was Head of Humanitarian Policy in the UK Department for International Development, where I participated in missions to the DRC and Chad. I have served in the UK’s Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, the UK Delegation to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and in British Embassies in Cyprus, Romania, New Zealand and Mauritius, with spells in London between those overseas postings. Before joining the FCO, I served an apprenticeship as an air conditioning engineer in Glasgow, where I attended schools in Partick and Bearsden. A proud Scot and Glaswegian, I am married to Claire and have two teenage daughters. Outside work, I love hill walking and watching football and rugby. I enjoy live music and reading history.
