I have pursued a specialist ground engineering career since 1983 with both consulting engineers and specialist contractors. Key experience includes:• Deep Foundations: Design of bored, CFA, driven cast in-situ and driven pre-cast piles for major structures and bridges. Analysis of the complex interaction between tunnels under construction and existing piles at the Angel, Islington and for Crossrail affected projects. Projects include very high capacity RCD piles in karstic limestone at Ma On Shan, Hong Kong, high capacity barrettes for the River Dee Crossing, North Wales and rock socket piles for the new airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and high capacity base grouted and non base grouted rotary piles and CFA piles in Thanet Sand.• Piling Disputes: Expert witness on a commercial and technical aspects of driven piling for a project in North Wales and a marine piling dispute in southern England. Technical assistance on piling claims in St Petersburg and Hong Kong. Defence work for a piling adjudication in Portsmouth, for a rock socket dispute in Manchester, and assisting defence work for a piling dispute in Kent. • Retaining Structures: Design of bored pile and diaphragm retaining walls for building basements and highway structures. Projects include the six storey basement for the Legal and General building, Harrow; a two storey basement in very soft marine clay in Singapore; the temporary works basement wall for the new Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh; Broadway Plaza, Birmingham and the landmark deep basement at UCLH, London and basements in the UK and Warsaw. Value engineering and wall integrity advice for £20 million diaphragm walls on CTRL 320. Deep basements in the City and docklands, up to 15 m deep.• Ground Improvement: Design of soil surcharge schemes with band drains and sand drains in Norfolk and Belgium. Design of dynamic compaction layout at Bander Abbas Shipyard, Iran and a dynamic compaction stone columns project in Lille.
