I have known John since 2005 when I first participated on an advisory committee for the NCTC Worldwide Incidents Tracking System (WITS) and have continued to engage with him professionally as we guest speak for each other's classes. John understands the importance of subtle distinctions in data in a way that only data developers can. He also understands how these subtle distinctions can easily mislead users of data and has worked very hard to make sure that the WITS data is coded so that it highlights important variation and that users can easily interpret their findings. Furthermore, he works closely with other developers to help improve all of our datasets so that users can be as accurately informed as possible. This is very refreshing for an environment that might be more naturally competitive. In fact, when we were creating the advisory board for the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), John's name was the first to come up. The insight that he provided during those meetings was especially valuable and has shaped the direction of the GTD. As a lecturer, John is highly engaging and extremely interesting. After he spoke to my Terrorism class, many of the students expressed an interest in applying for internships at NCTC. I have only had a little exposure to his teaching at Johns Hopkins, but conversations with his students made it clear that they enjoy his class quite a bit and have developed strong ideas about different aspects of approaching global conflicts. It left me wanting to take his class. I feel fortunate to have met John when I did, and have enjoyed our developing friendship. We have advised each other on our databases and have lectured for each other's classes.
