Multi-skilled laboratory role encompassing the whole of the sugar making process, including waste treatment.Major aspects of role include full analysis on all types of dispatching final sugar products (granulated, caster, liquid etc), monitoring the quality of stored juices within bulk storage containers, running and maintaining HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) and GC (Gas Chromatography) machines for in-depth sample analysis, effluent plant monitoring through visual checks, pump usage and analysis (COD, Ammonia, Suspended Solids, etc), monitoring cooling tower chemical dosing to control legionella, learning the vast array of analysis required to monitor the entire process of sugar production from sliced beet to sugar and animal feed, and supporting the entire lab and factory through chemical preparation, calibrations of major factory and analytical equipment, and extra analysis for monitoring and improvement work.This role has a wide scope and has involved communication with a variety of process technicians and managers to provide analytical assistance and highlight issues. Also involved in training new staff members.

Performed a large quantity of analysis on various mid-process samples to determine trends as potential improvement changes were introduced. This role involved me learning the general process of sugar production and having a more involved role with the factory and people working within it.

Trained to perform analysis on internally and externally made sugars of all types to determine quality for customers. Further trained to perform analysis on sugar production by-products such as animal feed, molasses, raffinate and vinasses.Helped co-workers perform silo air-conditioning inspections around all British Sugar sites as an internal audit.Helped prepare and partook in competency tests for all laboratory staff in all British Sugar sites to determine tester and instrument performance. Performed laboratory housekeeping and preparation tasks such as calibrations, sample composite preparation, chemical makeup, delivery retrieval, store room organisation, and cleaning.Involved in continuous improvement testing and helped produce calibration curves for newly made chemicals to be used by all sites.

Manned the shop floor greeting customers and assisting with queries, stock checking and item finding. Manned the stock room, often alone, sending down purchased items of all sizes and weights safely and quickly, and maintained area organisation. Manned collection points where items are checked and passed over to customers, providing help if required. Accuracy and speed were vital as well as a calm and inviting demeanour, especially when under stress during busy periods around Christmas.
