I was employed at Umvoto Africa, with the title "Groundwatermodeller and junior engineer", and was charged with the creation,calibration and updating of the numerical models of the various aquifers that are being developed as water sources. Themodels serve as management tools to help identify well placement,predict the aquifer response to drawdown as well as identifyscenarios such as saline intrusion for the aquifer near to the coastline.My responsibilities included:-Creating and upgrading of 3D groundwater models-Assembling site data, and data from the GIS department in order to create the models-Data processing-Updating old models when new data becomes available-Calibration of models, using both steady state and transient responses-Report writing and use of GIS software to create maps-Supervision of intern/temporary projects-Tutoring of interns on current software used in groundwater industry. Topics include modelling, programming, optimisation and the use of modelling software-Assisting in local geospatial database development and design-Assisting in geodetics project, where ground surface deflection is measured in response to water extraction.

This research was a one year project in which a numerical model was developed to approximate the efficiency of a cranked and free-piston Stirling Engine. The motivation for the project was waste heat recovery from the Pebble-Bed-Modular-Reactor (PMBR) system. The research served as a basis for optimisation studies on the Stirling engines serving as waste heat recovery systems.
