John Zuidema Work Experience Details
  • Chicago Magnesium Casting Co
    Quality Engineer
Chicago Magnesium Casting Co Apr 2019 - Present
Drove efficiency and excellence throughout manufacturing processes; evaluated conditions and developed / implemented solutions to fulfill quality and reliability standards while controlling costs. Conducted root cause analysis and identified opportunities for improvement, collaborating with Product and Design teams. Selected Achievements Included:-Dispositioned over 1,500 NCs amongst 9 different parts over 7 months, allowing for consistent monitoring of defects and a focus for reduction in occurrences/failure modes. As a result of the monitoring and dispositioning, 2 of the 9 parts have had scrap reductions of 4% and 19% over the lifetime of the monitoring.-Redesigned the sand testing system, resulting in a system of daily inputs and outputs to determine in real-time the foundry’s performance. Organized the procedures and relevant documents into a format that allows for easier access during external customer audits and internal checks on proper procedures. This daily real-time monitoring has contributed to less out of tolerance conditions in the sand and faster identification of the root causes of the defects.-Performed 5 internal audits as preparation for outside audits from customers, along with the followup and resolution of Opportunities for Improvement and Minor Findings, strengthening the quality department’s ability to answer customer inquiries.-Participated in 1 outside 5S event (customer run) and led another in the targeting area, resulting in increased organization and workflow through both areas. Created a corresponding database for the location of multiple targeting fixtures for ease of access as needed, directly reducing the time in-between jobs for setup by an average of 8-10 minutes each.
  • Atkore International
    Manufacturing Lean Leader
    Atkore International Jun 2017 - Feb 2019
Drives efficiency and excellence throughout manufacturing processes; evaluates conditions and develops /implements solutions to fulfill quality and reliability standards while controlling costs. Conducts root cause analysis and identifies opportunities for improvement, collaborating with Product and Design teams.-Sourced a new scarfing unit that reduced the scrapped tube amount by $20K in one (1) year along with 28 hours of downtime.-Negotiated the purchase of seven (7) new inkjet printers for writing on production tubes, with the intent to reduce ink consumption cost from ~$59K/year to ~$25-29K/year over a 60-month period.-Installed a new blade lubricant system, reducing lubricant consumption by 50% and saving $16K while prolonging blade life and wear.-Evaluated existing processes and introduced 10+ SOPs pertinent to improved employee training, maximizing the opportunities for correct implementation of new operational procedures and allowing for more workers to be trained in these procedures, improving runtime and allowing for easier training of new employees.-Supervised 6+ 5S activities on the mills to improve the work area and the flow of the area’s design.-Created 6+ work area guidelines for establishing parameters to begin standardization of processes across 3 different shifts.
  • Chicago Magnesium Casting Co
    Manufacturing Engineer
Chicago Magnesium Casting Co Aug 2013 - Apr 2017
Drive efficiency and excellence throughout manufacturing processes; evaluate conditions and develop/implement solutions to fulfill quality and reliability standards while controlling costs. Conduct root cause analysis and identify opportunities for improvement, collaborating with Product and Design teams.-Delivered projected savings of $44K in 2017 labor costs (following $20K savings in 2016) by driving implementation of new process to switch sand types for castings from zircon to ceramic round grain.-Lowered costs by $120K over 24 months by reducing scrap 50% on a particular part, while preserving 50 parts from 2015-2016; conducted investigation and retraining to achieve results. -Generated expected $500K/year savings by championing and managing purchase of new sand reclaimer that will reduce needed replacement of chills by 50% - 90%. -Ensured highest-quality product was used in manufacturing through creation of sand-testing database and revamping of testing procedures. Wrote test procedures and created limits to ensure production remains calibrated.-Significantly reduced Flash defect starting in June 2016—from $7K scrapped in previous 6 months to $1.4K/month since)—through Corrective and Preventive Action (CPA) that included proper training and implementation of key procedures.-Cut average monthly cost of Core Blow defect from $7.9K/month to $3.3K/month through introduction of Training within Industry (TWI) program.

Aided in the design of a nitrogen-cooled metal hydride test system, and tested the system's ability to absorb hydrogenDrafted several presentation slides to General Motors, loaded and tested the metal hydride system, and completed several tests at various temperatures. Tests involved pumping the system down to low-vacuum pressures, filling one part of the system with hydrogen while simultaneously filling a different part with nitrogen, and measuring how much hydrogen the particles absorbed with a simple volume calculation.
