About John Andersen
College changed my life. My career in higher education started in the lobby of Cal-Founders Hall when I was a Junior in college - see my article "Thank you Mark Hartely" for details. From that pivotal day forward my focus has been on impacting the lives of the students, staff, and colleagues I have had the privilege to work with since. Because college changed my life, I am fueled by the reality that that my work and my decisions have the potential to influence and shape the lives of the people I engage with in real and meaningful ways.I feel I have learned numerous lessons over the course of my career and there are three (plus one) that stick out to me the most.Leadership is not about the org chart.I learned quickly that my leadership was expected because of the title or titles I held – however, my leadership became effective, regardless of title, when I listened and sought to understand needs, goals, and expectations.‘Right Place, Right Time’ only happens when you show up.My professional growth accelerated when I sought to learn how departments other than mine functioned and were measured for success. I raised my hand and participated in as many work groups and projects as I could to learn more. I attribute this approach to having been selected for internal promotions and further opportunities to learn. Round pegs are for round holes.I believe in leading and managing individuals from their positions of strength. We are all good at something. We can all get better. I feel it is my job to learn what my team/s is good at and maximize it for the highest and best outcome.Plus one. My story is not complete. I am excited for the new lessons still to come.Core CompetenciesStrategic Planning and Execution | Multi-Location Management | Remote Management | Academic Operations | Career Program Management | Process Improvement and Implementation | Enrollment Process Management | Marketing and Lead Generation | Program Assessment and Application | Student and Alumni Affairs | Budget/P&L Management | Workforce Planning | Team Building and Training | Facility Management | Community and Media Relations | Campus Events and Activities | Employee Development and Coaching
