The Flow

I ADVISED HIGH-ACHIEVING elementary school students in the production of a community newspaper, The Flow. This was a real-world, year-round, independent newspaper, a 12-page color broadsheet the students used as a platform for the study and practice of journalism. The kids, in grades 4–6, were our reporters, photographers, columnists, and editors. This newspaper was not limited to the school or to school news; it was a new and exciting school community newspaper that sought to inform and empower all readers who call this area home. It also gave our participants priceless experience in leadership, risk taking, collaboration, and other work values—and got them started curating their own impressive portfolio of clips. We also explored newspaper production, translating page dummies to the screen and using Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. The Flow was a proud member of the Journalism Education Association, the National Elementary Schools Press Association, the New England Scholastic Press Association, and the Greater Shelburne Falls (Mass.) Area Business Association.
