John A. Dutton is President of Prescient Weather Ltd., a firm providing information and strategies for managing weather and climate risk. He is chief executive of ClimBiz—a Climate Change Information System for Business and Industry, and of the World Climate Service, providing seasonal and subseasonal forecasts to customers in energy, trading, and finance in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. Prescient Weather has been awarded substantial grants by the Department of Energy for ClimBiz and by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to improve WCS forecasts.He is professor emeritus of meteorology and dean emeritus of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University and holds B.S., M.S. and Ph.D degrees from the University of Wisconsin—Madison. He is a fellow of the American Meteorological Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is the author of scientific articles and books on atmospheric motion. Dr. Dutton has been active in professional organizations and in National Academy of Sciences studies related to atmospheric science, space science, and aviation. He chaired the National Research Council (NRC) Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate while it produced The Atmospheric Sciences Entering the Twenty-First Century and chaired or was a member of NRC committees considering aviation weather, environmental effects of aviation, high-end computing, and recently a national agenda for research on seasonal and subseasonal climate prediction. He has served on advisory groups to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and is currently an advisor to the National Weather Service (NWS).Dr. Dutton served for three years in the Air Weather Service of the U.S. Air Force after his doctoral graduation and was awarded an Air Force Commendation medal for work on the effects of nuclear weapons. He is a licensed commercial pilot with multi-engine and instrument ratings.
