About Johnathan S.
I am an experienced multi-disciplinary R&D scientist. Some of my most valued roles have been situations where I have combined prior knowledge while also stepping up to do a deep dive into another technology field to create new and better solutions to problems. My most interesting projects in recent years have involved developing machine learning based solutions to instrumentation, embedded system, and signal processing problems.

Technical Lead, Sls Process And Materials
Technical Lead, Sls Print Process
Lead development of v4.0 settings for the Fuse 1+ PA12 powder. This enabled drawing part outlines which dramatically improved fine feature strength and was a large improvement in small feature fidelity. This was enabled by the improved galvonometer control implemented in my first role at Formlabs. Also had significant input into the v5.0 speed improvement settings (which were also dependent on the improved galvonometer control).
Principal Integration Engineer
Developed an updated galvonometer controller with ~100x improved capabilities. This was a required piece of technology in subsequent material and process capabilities that shipped before the end of 2023. This technology ended up enabling the fine feature improvement in the v4.0 PA12 settings, was responsible for the speed improvement in v5.0 (~25% faster overall print speed), enabled shipping Polypropylene material, and will be a core enabling technolgy for all SLS processes and materials going forward.
Staff Scientist
I spent most of my time in this role working on a next generation mass spectrometer triple quad platform. Specifically I worked on the analyzer region, electronics for the quadrupoles and ion guides, and the data processing software.I was responsible for redesigning the RF and DC systems from scratch for the new platform goals. I took these systems from ideation through to system integration as the lead electronics engineer, but I am not an engineer. In a world where the triple quadrupole mass spectrometer is seen as possibly the most boring mass spectrometer I think there was plenty of meat left to improve in the basic functionality. Various patents have published describing some subset of the improvements that are possible.Other interesting work involved an array of convex optimization, machine learning, and related topics. This ranged from identifying appropriate problems through to implementations complete with custom numerical solvers tailored to specific problems. Part of one of these projects can be seen in a patent publication that covers a new and improved way to centroid mass spectrometry data where peaks do not need to be separated or even have a valley between them.By late 2022 it became clear that the Austin site would be closing, which it did in June of 2023, so I found a new role elsewhere.
Research Scientist
At Michelman I ran the pilot lab with a focus on understanding existing product production limitations as well as scoping out new sustainable and lower impact raw materials for the use in waterborne coatings applications.
Consultant
I worked on contract consulting work regarding the high resolution quadrupole project from my time in San Jose. Most of this work revolved around IP and patent work.
Principal Scientist
In my role at Eastman I ran the pilot lab and its team of operators and technicians for the Avra bicomponent fiber spinning. My major contribution to the project was in coming up with the models, data, and experiments to solve one of the long standing challenges with bicomponent fiber spinning. The outcome of my work was the understanding and implementation of the method to produce the most uniform bicomponent fiber from melt spinning that is publicly known.
Senior Scientist
I worked on the high resolution quadrupole research project in my time at the San Jose site of Thermo Fisher. I was listed as sharing the lead scientist role on the project internally by the end of my time on this project due to my contributions despite the other lead scientist being a veteran of the industry (Alan Schoen). My contributions on the project covered the algorithm development, detector design, as well as writing the embedded firmware code to make it run. Perhaps more importantly I took it upon myself to learn enough math surrounding convex optimization and machine learning to interface with Stephen Boyd to make a number of breakthroughs on the project on the algorithm development side of things to yield high quality results. The results were a system that could do real time constrained deconvolution of 3D video taken at a rate on the order of a million frames a second with the results being high quality mass spectrometry data.
