Urban Farm Worker & Farmers Market Sales
At Ecobain Gardens we strive to grow the most nutritionally dense foods, in the most environmentally sustainable manner possible; all year round. We follow all public health, HACCP and organic regulations ensuring you get the safest and healthiest product possible. We achieve this by growing vertically & hydroponically, within a completely controlled environment, Just 6 km from the Saskatoon downtown core. • Growing hydroponically allows us to dramatically reduce the amount of water used in the growing process. We use a very small amount of water, at just the right times (only when the plants truly need it). As well as capturing any water that may not get used up and recirculating it through the systems to be used again. Insuring no water is ever wasted.• Growing vertically allows us to grow a large amount of produce in a very small amount of space! Growing up ^ instead of out > allows us to grow up to 2000 lb. of micro greens every single month of the year! All while using significantly less resources then traditional farming.• Growing indoors allows us to control the temperature, humidity, and light schedule which insures we can grow our plants to the best of their genetic potential, all while dramatically minimizing the risk of pest or pathogens. Never mind getting to grow all year round in SK! (even in -50c temps)
Children'S Food Security Programming Coordinator & Good Food Box Coordinator
CHEP believes that every child deserves to have the healthy foods needed to learn and grow. We support children's nutrition programs in Saskatoon community and non-community schools. A community school is a school that is designated in having different socio-economic needs. Each school has specific personel and program support to help students and the community. CHEP works with schools, nutrition coordinators and other community liasons in providing the most current food education, tips for the kitchen and methods to maximize efficiency in their own nutrition programs. The Good Food Box is an alternative food distribution system that provides a variety of top-quality, fresh, nutritious foods at an affordable price. Individual families, as part of neighbourhood based groups each with a volunteer coordinator, pay for and order food boxes ahead of time. The Good Food Box Coordinators purchase foods in bulk from local producers and from wholesalers and volunteers and staff pack the boxes, which are then delivered to the neighbourhood depots. This program enables families to access nutritious fresh food that looks, smells and tastes delicious. The box also contains recipes and information about food and the food system for educational purposes.
