About John Baksi
Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals (part of Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust from February 2021) and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.Having graduated from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2000 achieving honours, obtaining a 1st class intercalated BSc in 1997, I acquired extensive experience in medicine and cardiology. I achieved MRCP in 2004, and completed specialist training in cardiology on the North West London rotation between 2005 and 2013. Following my PhD within the Cardiovascular Physiology Group at the International Centre for Circulatory Health, I was selected for Advanced Imaging Fellowships within North West London’s specialist centres.I joined the Royal Brompton Hospital in July 2013 as a consultant cardiologist specialising in heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy) and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). I was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 2020.I am an integral member of the inherited cardiac conditions and CMR services. I consult with patients who have heart muscle disease as well as family members who may be predisposed to a familial cardiac condition. This is complemented by expertise in CMR imaging, reporting across a comprehensive range of cardiovascular conditions including cardiomyopathy, ischaemic heart disease, valvular heart disease and aortic disease.Beyond contributing to the delivery and management of the clinical cardiomyopathy and CMR services, I also regularly support the Royal Brompton Hospital heart failure service, both via the MDT and the Trust’s non-invasive cardiology on-call rota and provide specialist CMR support to the the Royal Brompton Hospital cardiac sarcoidosis and cardiac oncology services. I have also led establishment of our high volume device MRI practice enabling access to MRI for all patients with cardiac implanted electronic devices (i.e. pacemakers and ICDs).In addition to pursuing clinical excellence, I am engaged in scientific research primarily within cardiomyopathy and CMR, service improvement, and medical education.I have previously served as Assistant Editor on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and am currently a Section Editor for the European Cardiology Review.I intend to have additional involvement in medical leadership and international humanitarian healthcare provision as well as Christian ministry and mission.

The CMR Unit, with its international reputation for cardiovascular imaging and research, performs approximately 6,000 studies annually, making it the world’s largest CMR unit clinical practice. My primary role was assisting in delivery of the clinical CMR service with responsibility for scan supervision (including stress perfusion) and primary reporting of scans. I acquired specialist experience in imaging and reporting numerous cardiovascular pathologies under the tuition of world experts: cardiomyopathy (Dr Sanjay Prasad), myocardial ischaemia (Professor Dudley Pennell), aortopathy and cardiac masses (Professor Raad Mohiaddin), and congenital heart disease (Dr Philip Kilner), I was appointed Lead Clinical Fellow in CMR in October 2012, the responsibilities of which included managerial contribution to the efficient running of the service and coordinating scanning and reporting timetables. This post also provided opportunity to undertake the 3-month CMR course, including scanning and involvement in the numerous multi-modality imaging and MDT meetings at the Brompton. I have Level 2 accreditation in both Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT.In addition to routine in-patient commitments, regular on-call duties included acute management of tertiary cardiology referrals (including for PPCI) as well as cross-specialty referrals. The regular out-patient clinics included specialist hypertension, EP, heart failure, cardiomyopathy and cardio-renal clinics.
