A little background on me: I have had a very eclectic career to date. For my first 20+ years after receiving Masters degrees at Cal in city planning and landscape architecture, I was an environmental planning consultant; the name of my firm was Perspective Planning. I have also worked as a staff planner within a city (Lompoc) as well as a county (San Luis Obispo). In 1984, I founded the San Luis Obispo County Land Conservancy and served as its first Executive Director. In December 2001, I completed a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, and I've been an educator since then, primarily at Allan Hancock College, where I taught US and California history, political science, and global studies.In 2016, I left the "job" I loved best, two terms on the San Luis Obispo City Council. Term limits kicked in and I am now on a "sabbatical" from politics. Previously, I'd served four years on that city's Planning Commission, and I have been politically active in several community organizations including the local Democratic Party. In 1992 and 1994, I served as the Democratic candidate for State Assembly in SLO and northern Santa Barbara Counties, although I was not successful in those campaigns.I now serve on the City's Cultural Heritage Committee, where we have just launched a long-overdue review of our City's Historic Resources Inventory. I'm also helping the Friends of La Loma Adobe to raise money for the restoration of an historic adobe that was once the most significant residence in San Luis Obispo.
