About John W. Beckius
Software developer, writer, and traveler. I’m at home anywhere, especially behind a terminal. Life just isn't worth living if you're not learning something new every day, so I'm constantly on the lookout for new techniques, new technologies, and new ways to get a point across. My expertise is in building API integrated Single Page Applications using a variety of frameworks, most recently Vue 2. I'm proficient in front-end styling, with experience building modular and reusable page elements using SASS, flexbox, and cssgrid, but my real passion is for the underlying app logic that drives complex web app functionality.I'm a proponent of functional programming, integrating Ramda into most of my projects for compositional support and Vuex for non-mutational state management. My favorite work environment is the fast pace and varied projects of marketing companies; each new project brings new requirements and the accompanying cutting-edge techniques and technology.
Listed skills include Creative Writing, Copywriting, Paid Search Copy, Creative Problem Solving, and 34 others.

Senior Web Developer
Javascript web development, predominantly Single Page Applications that interface with RESTFUL APIs. Projects ranged from year-long, big budget endeavors, to diverse and rapidly iterating, short-term assignments. As lead FE developer on many of these projects, I've held responsibility for architecting solutions to client requests in an Agile environment, prioritizing code reusability and modularity via functional programming practices to meet changing targets. Helped to codify and implement a company-wide Git versioning standard to encourage modern development practices.
World Traveler
Places I've been:USA, Canada, India, Japan, South Korea (4 years), Thailand, Singapore, New Zealand (1 year), Philippines, Germany, England, China, Mongolia, North Korea (30 sec), Vietnam, Malaysia, Borneo, Myanmar/Burma, Nepal, Guam, The Bahamas.TL;DR Global perspective, great at charades.
Content Consultant And Web Developer
Up North Distillery is a startup micro-distillery that opened its doors in January of 2016. I helped them to develop a strategy for launching their brand, as well as the guidelines for a cogent, consistent brand voice. Once these aspects had been established, I wrote copy, created visual assets, and designed their website with an emphasis on effective SEO.
Copywriter Intern
I've worked on Serta, JCPenney, ADT, NGK, Highmark Health, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Cat's Pride, and Pet Supplies Plus. I know my paid search copy, social media, and seem to spend an inordinate amount of time writing lines for cats. When I dive into the more glamorous side of this business, I like to think it comes out pretty well. I've written headlines for JCP print, lyrics for Owens Corning, and personalities for Serta's Counting Sheep, to name a few of my endeavors. You can find my portfolio at www.JohnBeckius.com
Freelance Writer
I write every day. It says so right here, on the internet, so it must be true. In 2014, I generated 200,000+ words of fiction content of entirely my own design. (No fan fiction. Sorry, internet.) This is on top of getting married and spending three months travelling through Asia (I had a great idea for a story while dying of Acute Mountain Sickness at 18,000 ft. And yes, it has to do with mountains). My portfolio contains work ranging in length from flash-fiction to a novel. I have been known to write as many as 5,000 words in a day. I’m a barebones writer. A good story is simple words, strong images, and good dialog. Interesting people, interesting situations. Theme is what comes along, lays itself down quietly, when the simple stuff is good. When the storytelling is good. As Stephen King once described it, writing is a kind of telepathy. Words conjure images in the mind of a reader. The more concise the word, the more the reader makes the image his own and internalizes the message it brings. As an independent writer, I have been responsible for setting my goals and managing my time. I write new content, set that content aside for a period of time, and then revise it for submission. Excel provides the main platform for my organization, allowing me to keep track of when stories come up for revision, what stories have already been revised, and where those revised stories have been submitted. A typical day involves juggling content creation, content revision, and media absorption (fancy words) in the form of books (oh, so many), twitter, blogs, magazines (digital and hard-copy), etc. Maintaining this level of work without supervision has been challenging. I am the first to admit that I have not always succeeded. But that failure has helped me to reinforce the habits I found to be lacking, sharpening my focus and improving my ability to act independently. I generate my own concepts; I research to reinforce my ideas; I think for myself.
Undergraduate Researcher
I worked with Dr. David McDonald, of the University of Wyoming, and one of his grad students to help analyze data gathered in the field by Professor McDonald over the course of 15+ years. We worked closely with each other to concept trends in the interaction networks of Long-tailed Manakins. Working with Professor McDonald's knowledge of the field, I expanded upon one of my theories to create a publication-grade scientific report. I focused on rapidly acquiring the concepts of a field that was new to me, so I could provide unique and helpful input during discussions with Professor McDonald and his graduate student. I expanded upon this knowledge until I could successfully write a technical piece encompassing my own research. As an added bonus from years of reading scientific journals, I have a high tolerance for processing technical jargon and the ability to yield useful information from it. Just check out that bibliography. Also, I can read graphs like you wouldn't believe. We had whole classes on this stuff.
Laboratory Technician
Measured specimens and recorded dataMaintained plant specimens in drought conditions, with a specimen survival rate of over 99%.Counted individual seeds using a magnifying glass for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. A man capable of this is capable of anything. Or so I like to tell myself.
English Instructor
Private tutor to korean students learning english.Provided small group instruction on a curriculum that I created and upheld.
