About John Birrell

Experience both in Operations and Project Piping Design for both operator and contractor. My career path has allowed me to work in the UK, Australia, Korea and Russia, office, site based, onshore and offshore. For the last 2 years I have been part of the INPEX Ichthys Venturer FPSO Start-Up Team, both in the DSME shipyard in Geoje Korea and offshore nationally. Before moving into Operations I spent over 20 years in Piping Design, I have been involved in multiple brownfield and greenfield projects for major Energy Companies, led teams of designers, performed as checker and extensively used 2D and 3D design packages. Responsibilities have included: Development and review of procedures and checklists for Start-Up and validation of these procedures using operations simulator. Documentation of all material requirements for start-up. Auditing vendor package piping specifications and flange management. System Responsible Person for over 100 systems as part of Completions Assurance group. OTP supervision and review of system dossiers, supervision of PSV bench tests. Experienced Process Area Authority including permit endorsement, fault finding, process isolations, rounds, safety system testing, changing equipment duty.I have vast experience of piping design on both brownfield and greenfield projects including detail design, study work, checking, as-building, onshore and offshore survey work, subsea work, fabrication and construction. I am experienced in PDMS / MDS modelling, PDMS Draft and 2D piping design using both AutoCAD and Microstation and have had exposure to PDMS administration. I am also fully conversant with international design codes, ASME B31.3, API etc. As a Lead Piping Designer I managed a design team, planning and scheduling all work, mentoring and training junior designers.I am motivated and keen to accept new challenges and responsibilities. I have well developed communication skills and am comfortable working office based, offshore or overseas.

Member of the Operations Start-Up Team for the Ichthys Project, Venturer FPSO. During the construction phase I was based in Goeje, South Korea where my duties included:Procedure and checklist development, review and validation for the start-up phase of the project.Vendor package specification review, PSV bench test witnessing and vendor package flange management checks.Final vessel closure inspections.Completions assurance work where I was the system responsible person for over 100 areas, this involved; Completions Assurance OTP supervision, dossier checks and reporting of system status.Start-Up material requirement documentation and purchase order checking to ensure the material being supplied was the correct quantity and specification.Training on several systems to ensure knowledge before the start-up and operational phases of the project, these systems included the MEG System, Condensate Systems, Turret Systems, Chemical Injection Systems, Flare and Drain Systems and Firewater Systems among others.INPEX ISSOW System training to ensure I was ready to perform operational tasks in the hook-up, start-up and operational phases of the project.During the Hook-Up phase of the project I have been working as a Process Area Authority (Start-Up) where my duties include:Process area start-up including the MEG System, Heating Medium System and Condensate Separation System.Permit endorsement and sign on, checking the permit covers the task required, all work party members are competent to carry out the work, they are working on the correct equipment and they are aware of all HSE concerns.Process Isolations including building isolations, checking and approving isolation schemes, confirming the integrity of isolations and verifying isolations carried out by other operators.Daily Rounds; checking equipment to ensure it is operating within specification.Leak testing of systems, ensuring all isolations are in place to permit testing on time.Pigging Activities.

Calibrating equipment, stocktaking and ordering of consumables. • Good understanding of hydraulic systems and process drawings due to 22 years piping design experience.

Woodside Energy, Pipework Replacement Project. Based in Woodside’s offices as part of the Facilities Engineering Team. Duties were to analyse the pipework inspection reports by system and decide on the correct course of action with regards to integrity. Typical actions were Painting, Temporary wraps, Furmanite clamps to Pipework Replacement. These actions were decided using Woodside standards and specifications. Scopes of work were produced for the major maintenance or projects groups to carry out depending on size.Woodside Energy, Small Brownfield projects on the Karratha gas plant, work included the addition of small equipment packages, associated pipework and supports and the tie-in to existing equipment.Vermillion Oil and Gas Water Injection Modifications. This was a FEED project for adding water injection facilities to the existing Wandoo ‘B’ platform. The project involved laying out new equipment, booster pumps, water injection pumps, hydrocyclone and routing all major pipework to allow production of a plus or minus 20% cost estimate. All layouts were done using PDMS.Coogee Resources, Montara FPSO Fuel Gas modifications. This project involved the detail design of several new fuel gas lines and their pipe supports. This was done on PDMS.Apache Energy, Several small Brownfield projects on various Apache installations, work included the addition of small equipment packages, pipework and tie-in to existing equipment.
