John Blake Work Experience Details
  • Racing To School And Racing Together
    Chief Executive
Racing To School And Racing Together Sep 2015 - Present
    London
Chief Executive of the education charity Racing to School, which leads the Racing Together partnership encompassing the sport's community engagement work. The independent charity Racing to School runs unique and free education programmes at racing venues nationwide for young people. In 2019, the charity and Aintree racecourse gained recognition from the Sports Business Awards for their work with schools in Liverpool through the Aintree Beacon Programme.Racing offers varied, fast-moving and colourful classrooms that help youngsters tackle maths exercises and team work challenges in new and interesting ways. For the older groups, we look to give them a more in-depth understanding of the sport and highlight how many different jobs are connected with racing that could be relevant to them - not just those who fancy being the next champion jockey. Our programmes have expanded quickly and in 2019 we will run 370 days and work with a record 15,000 young people, with over 70% meeting the sport for the first time, and over half located in inner-cities or deprived areas. The feedback we receive from pupils and teachers is always very humbling, with many saying it’s the best school trip they’ve ever been on, and 100% percent of teachers confirming that they would like their school to return for another day. The charity is reliant on voluntary donations and grants to increase its education and community-focused programmes.“As a former Trustee, I am honoured to now lead this small, tightly-run charity that is able to place new ideas and choices, and generate ambition among children of all backgrounds that racing has something valuable to offer them, whether as a leisure activity or a future career.”
