The first four years of my time in Babcock was spent as a technical engineering apprentice in electrical and mechanical engineering. Towards the end of my apprentice I was given a position in the computer services department as a technical support apprentice. At the start worked on various activities from cabling to installing various dumb terminals and controllers for these terminals. I also provided support for these. It was during this time that my manager encouraged me to start working on PCs and getting them to communicate with our mainframe. From there I moved on to setting up our first PC network using Novell Netware. I installed and supported various types of hardware and software that was installed on the PCs that connected to the Netware server and IBM Mainframe systems. The majority of my time was spent looking in to how we could use the new systems that were coming out and integrate them in to our network; this included new software to work with MS DOS and MS Windows. I also installed various network DOS and Windows user applications • Implemented Babcock’s first Novell Netware network over token ring.• Implemented and supported IBM AIX on RS6000 to support manufacturing process.• Implemented an experimental e-mail system.
