Project: USDS (Universal Subscriber Data Server)I project managed the replacement of the HLR (Home Location Register) with the USDS (Universal Subscriber Data Server). This constitutes the heart of intelligent network section of Telecom’s mobile network and is used to authenticate all mobile users and defines the attributes permitted for each user. The project comprised the supply and installation of the hardware in Wellington (test environment), Auckland and Christchurch. The loading of the operating system, middleware and the applications was implemented and tested from a Chinese based deployment team. A migration tool was developed from a USA based development team. This was tested and customized on site before being used in the test run and the final deployment. The provisioning system interfaced to several Telecom systems. EDS and Datacom were responsible for configuring these systems to meet the new system interface specification. Achievements• The successful implementation of the USDS in the mobile production environment supporting both UMTS/WCDMA (XT) and CDMA users. This was the most significant change in the mobile network since the introduction of CDMA • The successful launch on the first attempt into the production environment. This involved the detailed planning and coordination of an Alcatel-Lucent deployment and test team of around 20 people working for massive hours for the test run and the deployment the following weekend. The actual cut-over was transparent to the customer base as planned. There were some teething issues that were prioritized and addressed urgently• The successful development and operation of the migration tool used to load legacy customer configurations to the USDS• The successful leadership of the project team spanning more than 4 countries of different cultures.
