About John Rougeux ⛰️

Hi, John here. I run a consultancy called Flag & Frontier. We help growing companies craft a powerful narrative, put their message into action, and show buyers why they matter. We’re the only ones specifically focused on bridging the gap between narrative development and GTM execution.I’m a bit obsessed with solving this problem. I’ve seen too many potentially-impactful ideas fall short because the market didn’t understand or appreciate them. My goal is to help avoid that happening to you, and show the market why your solution is the only obvious choice. How about me? I’ve spent nearly two decades studying and executing marketing and category strategy. I’ve been a CMO, a one-person marketing team, a co-founder, and category design consultant. Along the way, I’ve developed a deep understanding of what works (and what doesn’t) when it comes to crafting narratives and turning them into action. When I’m not helping clients fight ‘market indifference,’ I’ll usually be found hanging out with my lovely wife and four daughters (when they’ll tolerate me), or getting in over my head in some outdoor adventure. I read Neal Stephenson, listen to Widespread Panic, think Tim Robinson is the funniest man alive, and am an imperfect follower of Jesus. If you’d like to chat, click the link that says “Book an intro call” near the top of my bio.Cheers! 👋

  • Bombbomb
    Vp Marketing Strategy
    Bombbomb 2020 - 2022
    Colorado Springs, Co, Us
BombBomb recruited me to lead their category design efforts. In that capacity, I helped transform the company from a “video email tool" to a “human-centered communication” platform. I also oversaw the team responsible for brand marketing, product marketing, content strategy, website performance, and sales enablement. ✅ The concepts we built through our category design process were outlined in our book, Human-Centered Communication: A Business Case Against Digital Pollution, a Wall Street Journal bestseller.✅ We transformed the way our customers think about digital communication through a thought-provoking documentary called Dear {first_name}. I served as the film’s Executive Producer and led the partnership with our production agency, Hackstone. ✅ The improved messaging and positioning my team and I established helped us grow ARR in the mid-market/enterprise segment by 40% YoY and increase organic website traffic by 74% YoY.✅ I boosted output and reduced burnout for my team of ten by championing Agile/Scrum methodology within marketing.✅ During my time there, BombBomb was included in G2’s list of Global Top 100 Software Companies and my team secured our #1 rank in G2's Video Email category.

  • Skyfii
    Vp Marketing, North America
    Skyfii 2018 - 2019
    Sydney, Nsw, Au
I joined Australia-based Skyfii when they acquired Causely, a company I had co-founded a few years previously. My main focus was re-positioning this SaaS company from being perceived as a commodity “Wi-Fi analytics” offering to the leader of a new category we called “omnidata intelligence.”✅ I led the development of a new brand narrative that helped us accelerate our sales cycle, expand deal size, and give investors the confidence needed to approve strategic acquisitions. ✅ Built the company’s product marketing foundation by crafting ICPs, buyer personas, and a messaging framework. My team and I also revamped our sales enablement collateral and the company website to reflect our new offerings and brand narrative. ✅ Helped secure initial customers and pipeline in North America by hiring the company's first marketing team, launching a brand podcast, strengthening relationships with channel partners, running field marketing, and testing demand gen campaigns.✅ While I was on the team, we increased ARR by 72% (from FY18 to FY19) and were recognized as a Deloitte Technology Fast 500™ company.

  • Causely, A Beonic Business
    Cmo And Co-Founder
    Causely, A Beonic Business 2013 - 2017
    Lexington, Ky, Us
As a co-founder of this cause-marketing SaaS company, I built out all aspects of marketing, including brand development, website creation, pricing strategy, demand generation, and configuring our HubSpot instance. I also hired a marketing team of five, managed agency relationships, and provided updates and forecasts to our investors.✅ I grew our customer base from scratch to over 6,000 paying businesses through PPC campaigns, SEO, website optimization, field marketing, podcasting, and word-of-mouth.✅ Led the company from zero to our first few million in ARR and worked with our CEO to execute a successful exit strategy, an acquisition by Skyfii in 2018.✅ Raised over $2MM for our charitable partners, funded entirely through customer revenue. Achieved recognition for the company as the #1 Place to Work in Kentucky in 2016.
  • Sojo Studios (Acquired By Zynga)
Vp Operations / Performance Marketing Lead
Sojo Studios (Acquired By Zynga) 2010 - 2013
Sojo Studios was the first company to incorporate cause marketing into gaming on social media. I led paid user acquisition, agency relations, and revenue modeling. Our IP was acquired by Meteor Games/Zynga in 2013.✅ Helped acquire over 2MM users through paid acquisition and by creating detailed cohort analysis models that helped us understand channel performance. ✅ Worked with our designers and engineers to launch an email marketing program using SendGrid and Mailchimp. This effort helped increase DAU (daily active users) and improve ARPU (average revenue per user).✅ Secured formal partnerships with global non-profits, which was key to helping us earn media coverage from Fast Company, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, TechCrunch, and other national outlets.

I gained a deep foundation of experience in marketing, GTM planning, project management, and financial analysis by working with the company that managed a $4.6B supply chain for over 18,000 Yum! Brands restaurants. ✅ I was initially hired to oversee the execution of loan programs for KFC and Taco Bell franchisees and a related multi-million dollar dividend fund, which I did flawlessly. ✅ After a year in this role, I was promoted to Project Manager for a CEO-sponsored technology initiative. I led over 200 suppliers in adopting Yum! Brands new barcode standards. I completed the project above goal and ahead of schedule, and received the company's Polaris Award for outstanding achievement.✅ When I completed this project, I was promoted to Program Manager. In this role, I worked closely with the Yum! Brands marketing teams and our distribution partners to execute new product launches across thousands of U.S. locations.
