About Burke Burnett

Aloha. I'm almost never on LinkedIn, so if you'd like to get in touch, please email me.My professional experience includes owning and managing a successful private business as well as running several non-profit organizations. My international work with policymakers, research scientists, and other stakeholders requires a robust and diverse skill set, communications skills, and attention to nuance and detail. My academic training is in policy, international relations, and economics. I am attuned to how different groups of actors interact and find ways to achieve common ground and practical solutions. I am keenly interested in technology development and how innovation is critical to economic progress, social change, and sustainability. Specialties: science policy, international collaboration, science & technology studies, space science, technology innovation, science communication, climate change, biodiversity conservation, conservation planning, Indonesia, New Guinea, Asia-Pacific politics and societies, China, Japan, biodiversity science, museums, and aviation. And finally, I'm also an actor (SAG-AFTRA member# 10524079) and part-time musician.

    Executive Secretary

As PSA Executive Secretary, I run the day-to-day operations of the organization, and report directly to the PSA Board composed of elected representatives from PSA's member organizations (typically National Academies of Science in the Asia-Pacific region). I have listed my title as "Executive Director" because LinkedIn lumps Executive Secretary with "executive assistants", which is not accurate. The Pacific Science Association (PSA) is a regional non-governmental, scholarly organization that advances science, technology, and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region by actively promoting interdisciplinary and international meetings, research, and collaboration. PSA convenes Pacific Science Congresses and Inter-Congresses every two years in different venues throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The first Pacific Science Congress was held in 1920 in Honolulu; the most recent Inter-Congresses were in Tahiti (2009) and Fiji (2013); the 22nd Pacific Science Congress was in Kuala Lumpur (2011). Pacific Science, the official journal of PSA, is a quarterly journal devoted to the biological, physical, and social sciences of the Pacific Region.PSA is composed of both national member organizations (typically National Academies of Science) and individual member scientists. The PSA is governed by the Pacific Science Council and an elected Executive Board, and has a permanent Secretariat based at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii.PSA facilitates science that focuses on key issues and problems in the region, in order to engage science in the service of human needs and improve both the environment and quality of life of the region’s peoples. We catalyze scientific and scholarly collaboration, help develop scientific capacity within the region, foster more effective communication between scientists, policy makers and the public, actively involve the Pacific Island states in regional and international scientific activities, and promote the “Science of the Pacific”.
