About John Cardone

Hi, I'm John. I'm a "brand therapist" and marketing consultant who helps values-driven entrepreneurs build brands that change lives, starting with their own. My clients call me "The Brand Therapist" because I use a combination of positive psychology, personal development, and brand strategy to help founders grow their brands and their businesses. My mission is to give people the tools, mindsets, and motivation to provide a better future for themselves and those they care about. I'm a firm believer that the best way to improve our communities and society as a whole is to foster economic self-determination and personal freedom. Before going into business, I had a brief career as a public artist. I cut my teeth in Syracuse, NY, where I ran a community arts center, developed after-school art programs, hosted a monthly slam poetry night, and served for one year as the city’s public artist in residence. After 5 years in the public art world, I changed careers and decided to try my hand at entrepreneurship. I founded Being Design with the dream of helping socially conscious organizations increase their impact through better branding and marketing.I'm a polyglot. I speak four languages, and I've lived in the US, France, Mexico, and Senegal.I am also committed Catholic. When not on the job, you will likely find me at a local coffee shop or exploring the city with my wife and three young children. In my spare time, I co-facilitate a small group for young families, as well as a semi-annual retreat to prepare engaged couples for healthy marriages.

Listed skills include Public Art, Teaching, Community Outreach, Social Media, and 19 others.

Community Based Public Artist

Syracuse, New York Area

As a community based artist, I worked directly with localized communities to co-create works of public art that gave voice to otherwise unspoken or unarticulated experiences held in the collective consciousness. Academically, this way of working is often called "Social Sculpture" or "Social Practice". Since the work was generally supported by grants or public funding, my primary responsibility was to facilitate dialogue and discovery among disparate groups (Public officials, community organizers, local residents) and later to facilitate the creative expression of individuals who consider themselves "non-creative."Projects were typically large-scale, and always involved the participation of the communities they concerned. By launching public projects that rely so heavily on collaboration of others, my work highlighted the essential dependence of an artists on their community, as well as the vital role of so-called "non-artists" in the co-creation of culture. In the end, each project created in own community of practice, revealing the power in all people to act as artists and to create the world in which they wish to live.

Jan 2013 - Dec 2015

Adjunct Professor

Syracuse, Ny

Wrote and instructed a cross-discipline course on urbanism and civic affairs for students in Syracuse University's Honors Program. The course, entitled "System City", used the city of Syracuse as a live model for the examination of the vital systems and basic anatomy of a city in the twenty-first century. The course included 12 panel discussions each pairing public and private sector representatives from different city departments and private sector service providers, including the city mayor, school board superintendent, and regional director of National Grid. Panel discussions were coupled with separate class discussions and analyses of political efficacy and redundancy.

Public Artist In Residence

Salt Quarters, At The Near West Side Initiative

Syracuse, Ny

SALT Quarters was a unique public artist residency program housed within the Near Westside Initiative, a community revitalization organization intent on resurrecting the Near Westside neighborhood of Syracuse, NY, through innovation in science, art, literacy, and technology. Each year the residency housed one local artist and two visiting artists who are charged with creating socially impactful public works in and about the neighborhood. During his year-long residency, John's public projects included:THRIVAL SKILLS - an alternative student handbook, life-hacking manual, and "Thrival" guide, co-written by seven students of Fowler HS in Syracuse, NY. The book contains 80+ pages of advice, from low-income teenagers, on how to thrive as a young person in an urban environment. The book was published in time for the students' graduation, with all proceeds from sales going directly towards the students' college fund. Contributing authors were Kim Truong, Bennitto DeJesus, Mupenzi Kabera, Titan Butikima, Jean Paul Mirindi, Thing Sai, Darius Hayes, and artist himself.SYRACUSE PEDESTRIAN ROUTES: a crowd-sourced, artist-curated, pseudo-official pedestrian transit system/map focused on residents of the Near Westside. Residents contributed to the publication of a printed map that was published and distributed across the city's transportation hubs and public institutions. The map, coupled with public walks led by the artist and neighbors, revealed the invisible and unbearable situations of those forced to walk in a car-dominated city in a harsh climate.
