Anchor 5, 5:30, 6 & 11 pm newscasts and do special assignment reporting, including John Carlin's Outdoors, where I feature the people and places that make Virginia's Blue Ridge a great place to live and play. I serve on many local boards and believe in giving back to the community. Many groups and organizations have asked me to speak or to serve as the emcee for benefit events. For grins I have taught myself the art of auctioneering and I have raised tens of thousands of dollars as a guest auctioneer for many organizations.As the owner of Carlin Aquarium systems for more than a decade, I understand the trials and tribulations of running a small business. Carlin Aquariums is fortunate to have many clients that appreciate the happiness and peace a beautiful aquarium can bring to their business or home.My life as a journalist melded well into my role serving many clients in public relations, where my background in media helped me train people how to appear on camera, and what to expect when the media called. It also helped me see how ideas might be successful with public or even B to B facing campaigns.Teaching is a passion for me and I enjoyed working as adjunct faculty at Virginia Tech and Radford University. Seeing the "light go off" in student's eyes, made all the difference. Then seeing my students go on to successful careers, gave me great satisfaction.My love for the outdoors, and the environment is evident in just about everything I do, whether it's cycling, fishing, photography or even my reporting.
