I retired from full-time work in January 2019 after 30 years working as a Director/CEO in the charity sector. The last 17 years were spent as CEO of the Family Holiday Association, a leading proponent of social tourism in the UK. The Family Holiday Association (now trading under the name of Family Holiday Charity) directly provided access to simple breaks at the British seaside for up to 5,000 disadvantaged families each year. Alongside its direct involvement with families, the charity used its extensive network of academic and British and European organisations and its public affairs platform to try to place social tourism on the policy agenda. The charity's work with VisitScotland and the Scottish Government over the previous decade was incredibly important in the launch of the UK's first holiday voucher scheme for disadvantaged families which was part of a multi-million pound post-pandemic Scottish tourism support package launched in October 2021. The charity is a delivery partner in the scheme; a remarkable achievement for a London-based third sector organisation. During my time at the Family Holiday Association I oversaw the charity change from a dated philanthropic model to an increasingly effective campaigning and action-orientated third sector organisation.I have extensive experience of change management and of handling charities in difficult situations.
