Manager, Mainbody Structure Design
CurrentFor that last 6 years I have been moved into various management roles with the intent of bringing under-performing departments to efficient, high functioning, highly collaborative groups. My success in turning around these groups is evident in the confidence SSL management has in continuing this practice. My current role is managing a group of Responsible Engineers for the overall mechanical structural design of the spacecraft. This assignment was specifically targeted at improving on-time performance of engineering deliverables and facilitating cross-functional training and promoting an agile workforce across the department. I have been successful, so far, in achieving a 63% improvement in on-time performance and a significant improvement in cross-functional collaboration with stakeholders in both the design/product development phase as well as the manufacturing customers. I’ve also been able to increase the internal communication, morale, and sense of accountability with my direct reports. Much of this success was driven through implementation of new communication, scheduling, and reporting tools, developing metrics, increasing transparency, and automating functions while increasing autonomy and innovation. I am also responsible for managing manpower needs and forecasting, scheduling resources and project schedules, assessing/managing risks and conflicts, and continuous improvement. In addition to my management role, I continue to lead and contribute to many cross-functional improvement projects within the company. Some of these include developing a visual management board for engineering, an enterprise level scheduling process, and new product development. This is typically done through techniques such as Agile/Scrum, brainstorming, etc.
