John Coonrod has worked in Africa, South Asia and Latin America for 40 years, and founded and serves as US Chair the Movement for Community-led Development.John became The Hunger Project’s first volunteer in March 1977, joined its staff in 1985, and has participated in the development and implementation of all of its programs.He has been interviewed on the BBC, CNN and NBC television and has lectured at the United Nations, Columbia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), New York University (NYU), Princeton University and the United States Air Force Academy.John also chairs the board of Sarvodaya USA and previously served on the board of Water for People and as co-chair of InterAction’s Food Security and Agriculture working group. In 2012 President Obama appointed him as a Citizen Delegate to the UN Commission on the Status of Women. He is an avid amateur photographer and figure skater. He and his wife Carol live in Washington, DC.John was trained as a physicist at Stanford (BSc) and the University of California-Berkeley (MA, PhD), where he was active in the civil rights and antiwar movements. As a physicist, he was involved in the design and construction of the first whole-body CAT scanner and the first tokamak designed to achieve a break-even fusion reaction.
