Data systems applications are responsible to process and deliver low-latency feeds back to reporting and budgeting applications. Yahoo's Data systems infrastructure consists of 1000's of Free BSD hosts writing and reading into Netapp storage (about 1 PB). The application consumes Billions of revenue events and is run 24X7 uptime. Senior Engineering Manager's responsibilities are to design, build, support and maintain a top-class applications infrastructure for Data systems to handle the large-scale incoming traffic. The role also consisted of ensuring the Data application had 99% uptime and the teams had the right tools (automation+monitoring) to maintain high uptime. Role also consisted of ensuring applications adhered to strict SOX standards and also involve in quarterly+annual reviews with external SOX auditors. Designed parallel hot-hot BCP data pipelines that had ability to execute BCP switchover in less than five minutes (having hot-hot BCP data pipeline allowed the application to have very low customer outage).
