Those of us working in the non-profit sector have a unique opportunity: seeing our efforts magnified in the lives of those who benefit from the missions and programs of our organizations. I have found it to be transformational personally, as well.I cut my teeth at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, learning the ropes of major donor cultivation and solicitation. I learned the difference between sales and fundraising--a distinction many in the field do not perceive. I count Dyan Sublett as a mentor--bringing me along into a gentle and respectful professional practice.From there, I went on to the Orange County Museum of Art, serving as their Director of Development. I was fortunate to work with top-notch professionals, such as Naomi Vine and Liz Armstrong in an environment that revered each individual's "arts identity."In 2002, I struck out on my own, building a roster of small arts non-profits. I was able to pick and choose–each of the organizations I consulted for had something unique that spoke to me--an abundance of passion on the board, a firecracker executive director... an undeniable track record of changing lives in the community. They all have compelling missions that move me deeply.Between 2007 and 2009, I worked full-time with Echo Horizon School, a great independent elementary school I had consulted with since 2003. As Director of Operations, I was able to broaden my experience beyond development and communications, working with budgeting, data systems and risk management.In June 2009, I returned to my consulting practice, picking up where I left off two years prior.
