After 33 years in the Royal Navy, retiring after commanding a Joint Inter-Agency Task Force as a Commodore, I am thrilled to be embarking on a new career as the Assistant Chief Coastguard for Channel Operations in HM Coastguard.My wide-ranging responsibilities include: accountability for the Dover Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, for Search and Rescue (SAR) in the Channel area, the Channel Navigation Information Service and the safety of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats; accountability for the HM Coastguard Rescue Teams in Areas 7 and 8, covering the coastlines of Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Kent and East Sussex and West Sussex; serving as HM Coastguard's national lead for migrant small boat operations, maritime security and Vessel Traffic Services; serving as a member of HM Coastguard's Chief Officers' Group; participating in the roster as HM Coastguard's Duty Operational Director.

I drew on the expertise of multiple stakeholders, including HM Coastguard for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations and other Government departments as appropriate, to understand the scale of the challenge, then maintained strategic oversight of the mission while continually reviewing resource and asset allocation to enable an effective and efficient response from all stakeholders. I provided strong, visible strategic leadership and was comfortable making difficult decisions and exercising sound judgement at a strategic level throughout, while giving due consideration to the wider impact and optics of my decisions in this highly politicised area. -

I was runner-up in the ‘Most Outstanding Sailor or Marine’ category in The Sun newspaper’s inaugural ‘Millie’ awards in 2008 and was awarded the annual RN prize for having made the best contribution to a positive image of the Royal Navy. -
