When I look back on my career journey I often wonder what my younger self would think of where I am now and where I want to be in another 20 years. Firstly, I don’t think I would have used the words ‘career journey’ when I was younger and I think I would be genuinely surprised that I wasn’t running skateboarding and music events in my 30’s… But my journey has been rewarding and exactly what it needed to be for me to become the leader I am today.My journey has been closely linked to sport and disability, but more than anything else, it has been about building strong, safe and resilient communities where difference is embraced and celebrated. Sport and recreation are perfect tools in our culture to build community and with strong, innovative and inclusive structures behind them, it can engage more Australians and help them to lead positive and healthy lives.In my role with Inclusive Sport SA, I am able to work with the leaders of sport in South Australia and help their organisations to be more welcoming and inclusive of all people. We have been on an ever changing journey over the last eight years and it is a highly rewarding role. Our current focus is on the community development outcomes that can be achieved through sport and recreation and leading change in our sector.And in another 20 years, when I look back on my ‘career journey’, regardless of what roles I take on, I want to know that I had an impact, that my leadership helped leave our world in a better place.
