It’s been a long time, like 10 years, since I’ve updated my LinkedIn profile. My daughter, then in middle school, is now a college graduate and applying to MD/PhD programs. Me, I’m really tired which is code speak for ready to retire. It’s been a long road to travel on, around 50 years and approximately 40 jobs. I flipped burgers at Chat ‘n’ Chew in Kenosha, Wisconsin, ran customers down the Colorado River as a raft guide, built a wooden boat in Maryland, created an untold number of CAD drawings and finally acted as the Sustainability Coordinator at UCHealth. I want to share with you three lessons I’ve learned the hard way over the years:1.

Sometimes the door that opens is much more suited for you than the door that closed. As the Sustainability Coordinator for PVHS my initial focus will be on benchmarking where we have been so as we make improvements the benefits are easily recognizable. I will be working with employees, utility providers, vendors and contractors to help UCHealth North a better environmental steward. There is always room for improvement and it will be a task that is never finished. Along the way I am sure there will be disappointments but I am confident that what I am doing is beneficial not only for our patients but for the employees who serve them and the community that surrounds us.
My company name is really a misnomer for what this business has evolved into. What initially started out as a very small woodworking company, me, has grown into a very small, me, Do-It-Yourself designer, technical artist and editor. I have worked for only one company, Creative Publishing International, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I have been on the project team for over 10 books and I continue to work remotely for them, usually on 1-2 projects per year. I have countless ideas of new book ideas, not just DIY topics, that I would love to discuss with any publishers that are interested in hearing my ideas on books that surround sustainability, DIY and sports for young girls.

When asked what my role as Sustainability Coordinator entailed I frequently replied, "all things green". As someone coming into a newly created position I was challenged to look beyond the normal role of a Sustainability Coordinator. In a company the size of Neenan, approximately 200 employees, I needed to become a "jack of all trades" as it related to sustainability. I think the reason I succeeded in this role was because of my father's influence, He was someone who could fix anything (including a tube style TV and any model of Rambler or AMC). At Neenan this meant I was responsible for: our recycling program; bringing in new products so we could test them out before using them on projects (I could tell a few stories about toilets and waterless urinals); encourage and help others to become LEED Accredited Professionals; assisting with the continuing education requirements of being a LEED AP + Specialty; using email as an effective means of educating others about sustainability; managing Neenan's committment to voluntarily reduce greenhouse gases via the Fort Collins ClimateWise program; managing the LEED certification process on K-12 school projects and teaching others how to do the same; keeping abreast of Addenda published by the GBCI which could affect the certification of our LEED projects; maintaining databases that tracked Neenan's LEED projects and LEED APs so we could quickly see our progress; and last, but certainly not least, helping others to become more mindful. Everything was relatively straightforward except for the last role, teaching mindfulness. It wasn't a formal role for me, but one that I felt compelled to teach. My learning, CHANGE IS DIFFICULT. In the end it was what wore me down the most, the political banter and an environment of knowers and not learners. I haven't given up, just shifted my focus to a smaller arena where I believe my passion is respected and appreciated.

As an integrated Design/Build firm, The Neenan Company believes that the built environment is about more than just buildings – it’s about what buildings enable our clients to do. Whether it is improving student test scores, expanding access to healthcare, increasing employee productivity, or enabling the development of new technology, Neenan works with clients to solve their business problems with cost-effective, sustainable facility solutions. Sustainability is fully integrated into the entire process such that our clients can make informed decisions that are right for their clients and our planet. As a LEED Specialist at Neenan I will be working on the Mapleton School District project, which will have three LEED Gold Certified buildings. This will be my second LEED project where I am the LEED Administrator and I am looking forward to the challenges of getting these projects certified. Though I am no longer the Sustainability Coordinator at Neenan I still have my love for the sustainable built environment and a passion for sustainability in my personal life. My family recently installed a Photovoltaic system and you can see how it's doing by following this link - http://enlighten.enphaseenergy.com/public/systems/Xs6r7652Other ways I am looking to reduce my families footprint is converting our hybrid to a plug-in and developing a website that helps others in "Sustaining Your .....", whether it be your business, home, life, ride or world I would like to help others in sustaining it.
