PhD Work and Lifelong Interests - How people treat each other always was more important to me than what they "said" about themselves. I think my values were shaped heavily by growing up in rural America, where what people DID told much about who there WERE and what they really believed inside.Accordingly, I gradually felt myself drawn to history and ethics. History was related to the Facts. Ethics was related to how people behaved. I still am very much this way. "Don't tell me; show me!" My PhD at the University of Chicago took the long way around. I studied deep, wide, and hard, on moral and ethical issues and systems. I learned not just "what works" but What Will Last through bad times and the storms of life.I am available to work with corporations for custom-designed programs that meet special situations, with special needs. I always have had contempt for cookie-cutter programs with big promises and small outputs to the conditions on the ground. So in my work with decision-makers I (A) listen very carefully; (B) question for clarity and elaboration until I know precisely what your needs are; and then, (C) I construct a draft program, which YOU critique, then we prepare for the Presentation, Learning, Interaction, Questioning, Applications, and Assessments.You should know I prefer outcome-based programs. You do not contact me so I can ride my hobby-horse and impress you with all I know. You contact me because you have (1) problems that are draining you, or (2) goals to advance your workforce or executive team. You have situations. You cooperate with my penetrating questions. We work to design. We present. Change occurs. But it is not really "change" unless YOU can monitor the effects over the next Quarter. And I can help you construct the testing tool that tells you, "We were correct to contact Dr. John for our situation! We have change! Our group is healthier! This was done through providing parties with information related to the investigations, and allowing them an opportunity to seek the best resolution to their grievance through mutually agreed means. NATI had a very unusual mission unparalled by most charities. NATI provided direct payments of bills to creditors of families being wiped out by costs of terminal illness medicine, treatment, and care. I know of no other charity with such direct services to people, with the exception of Habitat for Humanity and its provision of no-interest homes to qualified families.My tasks were: (1) to review, redraft, and suggest new policies for NATI; (2) to represent patient families in financial crises with mounting debts caused by loss of a terminally ill wage earner; (3) to negotiate debt cancellation or reasonable debt repayment plans with creditors; (4) to thank those company representatives authorizing solutions, and build partner recognition; (5) to report to the President successes and obstacles in this developing service model; and, (6) to build partnerships with foundations and regional charities, such as The United Way, to fund NATI's mission.Principal recommendation in policy changes were (1) to broaden board memberships in this family-owned charity; (2) to institute best practices enabling easier access to foundations and other grant-issuing entities; and, (3) to widen local services and partnerships.
